Joseph Price Orations (1927-present)

The Joseph Price Orations were established (1927) under the auspices of the American Association of Obstetricians, Gynecologists and Abdominal Surgeons, by a student and admirer of the late Dr. Joseph price, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Joseph Price Orator is selected annually by the President of the Association to present the oration at the annual meeting of the Association. Each orator, a person distinguished in a field of special interest to the Association, is from outside the United States.

The first Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1928, by Professor Aldred Scott Warthin, Ann Arbor, Michigan, on "Sex Differences in the Pathologic Picture of Syphilis."

The second Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1929, by Professor R. W. Johnstone, Edinburgh, Scotland, on "The New Physiology of Menstruation and Its Practical Implications in Obstetrics and Gynecology."

The third Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1930, by Professor Jean Louis Faure, Paris, France, on "Abdominal Hysterectomy for Uterine Cancer."

The fourth Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1931, by Professor Ludwig Adler, Vienna, Austria, on "Vaginal Hysterectomy for Uterine Cancer."

The fifth Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1932, by Dr. Bethel Solomons, Master, Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, on "The Toxemias of Pregnancy."

The sixth Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1933, by Dr. Walter W. Chipman, Montreal, Quebec, on "John Hunter, the Founder of Scientific Surgery."

The seventh Joseph Price Oration was given in September, 1934, by Professor Erwin Zweifel, University of Munich, Munich, Germany, on "The Diagnosis of Carcinoma of the Uterus in Its Earliest Stages."

The eighth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 16, 1935, by Dr. James Young, Hammersmith Hospital, L. C. C. Ducane Road, Hammersmith, London, W. 12, England, on "Maternal Mortality and Maternal Mortality Rates."

The ninth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 14, 1936, by Professor Miles Phillips, Sheffield, England, on "The Rational Use of the Obstetric Binder With an Historical Retrospect."

The tenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 20, 1937, by Dr. Daniel Dougal, Manchester, England, on "The Problem of Endometriosis."

The eleventh Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 22, 1938, by Professor Charles Burger, University of Budapest, Hungary, on "The Biological Significance of the Fetal Membranes."

The twelfth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 7, 1939, by Dr. James B. Collip, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, on "The Physiology of the Anterior Pituitary Gland."

Because of the European war situation, it was not possible for Dr. James Heyman of Stockholm, Sweden, to come to the meeting to deliver the oration for 1940.

The thirteenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 11, 1941, by Dr. Delfin Arcila, Caracas, Venezuela, South America, on "The Management of Abdominal Hernia."

No oration was given in 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, or 1946.

The fourteenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 4, 1947, by Dr. W. F. T. Haultain, Edinburgh, Scotland, on "Now and Then."

The fifteenth Joseph Price Oration was given September 9, 1948, by Dr. O’Donel Browne, Master, Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, on "A Survey of 113 Cases of Primary Dysmenorrhea Treated by Neurectomy."

The sixteenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 8, 1949, by Mr. Charles D. Read, F.R.C.O.G., London, W. 1, England, on "Stress Incontinence of Urine With Special Reference to Failure of Cure Following Vaginal Operative Procedure."

The seventeenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 7, 1950, by Mr. John Stallworthy, 85 Banbury Road, Oxford, England, on "The Dangerous Placenta."

The eighteenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 6, 1951, by Dr. Robert J. Kellar, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, on "The Circulation in Pregnancy."

The nineteenth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 4, 1952, by Mr. C. McIntosh Marshall, 84 Rodney Street, Liverpool, England, on "The Newer Gynecology: Some of Its Surgical and Anatomical Implications."

The twentieth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 11, 1953, by Dr. Gordon King, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China, on "Advanced Extra-uterine Pregnancy."

The twenty-first Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 9, 1954, by Dr. John I. Brewer for Professor James Heyman, Director of the Radium-hemmet, Stockholm, Sweden, who was unable to attend because of illness. The title was, "Some Problems of Current Interest Relating to Classification and Treatment of Uterine Carcinoma."

The twenty-second Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 9, 1955, by Mr. J. Chassar Moir, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, England, on "Vesicovaginal Fistula."

The twenty-third Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 6, 1956, by Professor P. Hubert de Watteville, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland, on "The Use of Obstetrical Analgesia at the Maternity Hospital of Geneva."

The twenty-fourth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 5, 1957, by Mr. Magnus Haines, London, England, on Tuberculous Salpingitis as Seen by the Pathologist and the Surgeon."

The twenty-fifth Joseph price Oration was delivered September 4, 1958, by Dr. Roberto Caldeyro-Barcia, University of Uruguay, School of Medicine, Montevideo, Uruguay, on "Hormonal Control of the Contractility of the Pregnant Human Uterus."

The twenty-sixth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 10, 1959, by Mr. Stanley Way, Newcastle on Tyne, England, on "Carcinoma of the Vulva."

The twenty-seventh Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 8, 1960, by H. L. Sheehan, Liverpool, England, on "Jaundice in Pregnancy."

The twenty-eighth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 7, 1961, by Sir John Peel, London, England, on "Progress in the Knowledge and Management of the Pregnant Diabetic Patient."

The twenty-ninth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 6, 1962, by J. C. McClure Browne, London, England, on "Postmaturity."

The thirtieth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 5, 1963, by Hands Kottmeier, Stockholm, Sweden, on "Complications Following Radiation Therapy in Carcinoma of the Cervix and Their Treatment."

The thirty-first Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 9, 1964, by J. B. Blaikley, London, England, on "The Treatment of Difficult Fistulas With Particular Reference to Colpocleisis."

The thirty-second Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 9, 1965, by Professor T. N. A. Jeffcoate, Liverpool, England, on "Urgency Incontinence in the Female."

The thirty-third Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 8, 1966, by Sir Hector MacLennan, Glasgow, Scotland, on "The Art of Gynecology in a Computer Age."

The thirty-fourth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 7, 1967, by Professor Eamonn de Valera, Dublin, Ireland, on "Abruptio Placentae."

The thirty-fifth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 5, 1968, by Professor Ian Donald, Glasgow, Scotland, on "Launching a New Diagnostic Science."

The thirty-sixth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 4, 1969, by Professor J. S. Scott, Leeds, England, on "Obstetric Analgesia."

The thirty-seventh Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 10, 1970, by Professor C. J. Dewhurst, London, England, on "The XY Female."

The thirty-eighth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 9, 1971, by Professor Arnold Klopper on "Estriol in Anmiotic Fluid."

The fortieth Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 6, 1973, by Dr. E. A. J. Alment, Northampton, England, on "Obstetrics and Gynecology in the New Society."

The forty-first Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 5, 1974, by Sir Stanley G. Clayton, London, England, on "Publication in Obstetrics and Gynecology."

The forty-second Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 4, 1975, by Sir Lance Townsend, Victoria, Australia, on "Launch Out Into the Deep."

The forty-third Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 9, 1976, by Dr. Frans Geldenhuys, South Africa, on "Chromosomes and the Gynecologist."

The forty-seventh Joseph Price Oration was delivered September 3, 1980, by Professor Joseph Zander, Munich, Germany, on "Carcinoma of the Cervix–An Attempt to Individualize Treatment: Results of a Twenty-Year Cooperative Study."

The forty-eighth Joseph Price Oration was delivered May 20, 1981, by Professor Otto Kaser, Basel, Switzerland, on "Function-Retaining or Restoring Surgery in Gynecology."
